As part of an ongoing commitment to reducing barriers to accessibility, the Township of Woolwich has enabled an innovative new product on its website called BrowseAloud.
August 20, 2011 /HiTech PR News/ -- BrowseAloud, a text-to-speech software, will boost the accessibility of the Township's website for people who are experiencing literacy challenges, learning difficulties, dyslexia, mild visual impairments or who speak English as a second language.
Users can visit the Township's website www.woolwich.ca, and click on the BrowseAloud icon in the bottom left-hand corner. The icon will direct you to a page where you can download the software. BrowseAloud allows users to listen to website content in a high quality human-sounding voice (19 to choose from!) which can be altered to suit the listener's specific needs. Users just point to the text on the screen they would like read out loud and BrowseAloud highlights each word as it is read out loud. This is useful tool in aiding literacy and comprehension, and additional features include a Talking Dictionary, Screen Masking facility, a translator and MP3 Maker.
The Township of Woolwich has an Accessible Customer Service Policy that is designed to ensure that its goods and services are provided in a way that respects the dignity, independence, integration and equal opportunity for all people. The implementation of the BrowseAloud software will help to make the Township's website more accessible to a broader range of people. Woolwich Mayor Todd Cowan commented that, "BrowseAloud is easy to use and will help open our website up to people who might not have used it before."
